The Joy Challenge: Day 3

The Joy Challenge: Day 3

If you're just joining us now in the Joy Challenge, check out day 1 and day 2 here!

Welcome back to the Joy Challenge! This next good gift from the Lord is a little more intangible than the last two days, but I believe it's just as wonderful and possibly, even more important: beauty.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
— Philippians 4:8, ESV

What do you first think about when you hear the word "beauty"? Beauty is something created by God and, I believe, important for our own existence. Without any type of beauty around us, we can become down and depressed very easily. When I visited New York City five years ago, I felt depressed and pretty blue. I thought I was just tired from a long school year and choir tour, but when I got near Central Park (I didn't even have to go inside), I felt instantly better, like I could breathe again. It's because there were trees; I find beauty very easily in nature and it somehow refreshes my soul. Some people find beauty in other places, such as the city itself; they could then live in NYC and be just fine.

Where do you find beauty? Is it in nature? A clean house? A vase of flowers? The city lights? Music? A decor style? Jot down three things you find beautiful in your world (other than people or extravagant worldly possessions). See if there's some way you can incorporate those things into your life.

Mine would look something like this:

1. Yosemite National Park {Plan a trip there in the near future}

2. Succulents (Buy one or two to plant in that little container sitting on the bookshelf)

3. Farmhouse decor (Chalk paint the coffee table, TV stand, and dinner room dresser)

These three things were literally right off the top of my head... I could keep the list going because I just love beauty so much. The balance of that, of course, is to not go crazy! Beautiful things often cost money, a lot of money, so pace yourself. Find beautiful things that don't drain your pocketbook and enjoy!
